Örebro is a city in central Sweden, about 200 kilometres west of Stockholm, with around 161,000 people in the municipality. The settlement developed during the Middle Ages around a crossing of the Svartån river and is believed to have received town privileges in the 13th century. Its most prominent landmark is Örebro Castle, a fortress with origins in the 14th century that stands on an island in the river in the middle of the city. Other notable sights include the historic wooden buildings of Wadköping, the 58-metre Svampen water tower and the large Stadsparken beside the river. Örebro also has an unusually strong connection to heavy music. Grindcore band Nasum and doom metal group Witchcraft were formed here, while internationally renowned Fascination Street Studios has recorded, mixed or mastered artists including Opeth, Sepultura, Kreator, Dimmu Borgir and Amon Amarth. The punk band Millencolin also comes from Örebro and has lent its name to an annual local music prize.
