Rock Hill Music Club is an underground live music club and cultural venue in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Located in the Hulváky district, it operates as a multi-genre space for concerts, theatre, spoken-word performances, readings and other cultural events.
The present club opened under the Rock Hill name in March 2018, but the name reaches back to one of Ostrava’s early post-communist rock clubs. The original Rock Hill opened on Hulvácký kopec on 4 October 1991, shortly after the end of communist rule in Czechoslovakia. Its opening concert featured Marxova Tchýně, Marcel Woodman and Katka a její pistolníci.
Although the original club existed for less than a year, it became a meeting point for Ostrava’s emerging alternative scene. Bands that played there included S.P.S., Už jsme doma, Zuby nehty, Půlnoc, Slobodná Europa and Root. The club closed after a Visací zámek concert on 8 June 1992, and the abandoned building was destroyed by fire in 1994.
More than 25 years later, a nearby venue previously known as Chacharkovo doupě adopted the Rock Hill name. The revived club was created with the memory of the original Rock Hill in mind, and the reopening concert in 2018 featured Jolly Joker, Nitrocel and Marxova Tchýně. The last of these had also played at the original club’s opening in 1991.
The current Rock Hill Music Club has both a larger concert room and a smaller stage in the pub area. This allows the venue to host full band concerts as well as smaller acoustic shows, readings, theatre and other performances.
Rock, punk, hardcore and metal form a strong part of the programme, alongside alternative and electronic music. Events at Rock Hill Music Club have included death metal, grindcore, hardcore punk, stoner metal and goth nights, with recurring or named events such as Anti-Poser Death Metal, Sweat Fest, Metal Massacre and Goth Hill.
The combination of present-day underground programming and a direct link to one of Ostrava’s short-lived early 1990s rock clubs gives Rock Hill Music Club a distinctive place in the city’s alternative music history.
