Paramount is a volunteer-run underground live music venue at Eriksvej 40C in Roskilde, Denmark. With a capacity of around 300 people, it is used by several independent music associations and promoters rather than operating as a conventional commercial concert club. Punk, hardcore and metal are particularly strongly associated with the venue, although the programme also includes rock, hip-hop, electronic music and other underground genres. Rehearsal association Råstof Roskilde is closely connected with the building, while individual collectives organise their own concerts on the Paramount stage.

The name Paramount has roots in Roskilde’s music scene dating back to 1963, when a jazz and folk association of the same name was established. The organisation later acquired premises on Eriksvej, where concert activity was established by the early 1970s. Jazz gradually disappeared from the programme as rock and punk became more prominent, and Danish punk band Lost Kids played at Paramount in 1980. During the following decade, the venue was also known as Club Paramount or Paramount Fønix and hosted artists including Nico in 1982.

Paramount occupies part of the surviving buildings of the former Kemp’s tannery, giving the venue a distinctly industrial setting. Råstof Roskilde, founded in 1982, later established rehearsal facilities in the complex, and the combination of rehearsal rooms and a shared stage helped turn the site into an important base for local musicians. The venue has long provided space for experimental and emerging artists, with members and independent organisers able to arrange their own concerts.

Punk and hardcore developed a particularly strong presence during the 2000s through the Paramount DIY collective, which organised concerts on non-profit and do-it-yourself principles. Metal gained its own regular programme through obSCENE, founded on 27 December 2003 to provide a stage for emerging heavy bands. The volunteer-run organisation continues to arrange metal concerts at Paramount, generally concentrating on underground acts rather than larger touring names. Other groups use the same room for different styles, making Paramount a shared platform for Roskilde’s independent music scene.

Metal remains a regular part of the programme alongside punk, hardcore and rock. Recent concerts have included Danish thrash metal band Abuser and other emerging heavy acts, while Råstof Roskilde continues to use the venue for concerts and related events. Roskilde Municipality describes Paramount as a user-run underground venue, reflecting the grassroots structure that has defined it for decades. More than half a century after concerts first became associated with the Eriksvej site, Paramount remains an important stage for smaller and more experimental bands outside Roskilde’s larger venue circuit.
