Roskilde is a historic city on Zealand, Denmark, with about 90,000 people in the municipality, set at the end of Roskilde Fjord roughly 30 km west of Copenhagen. One of Denmark’s oldest and most important medieval cities, it grew as a royal and religious centre and was the country’s capital before Copenhagen took over that role. Today Roskilde is best known for Roskilde Cathedral, a UNESCO-listed royal burial church, the Viking Ship Museum with its 11th-century ships from the fjord, and Roskilde Festival, one of Europe’s major music festivals. The compact centre has cafés, shops and old streets around the cathedral, while the harbour and fjord add waterfront walks and Viking-history sights. Getting in and around is straightforward by train from Copenhagen, with local buses and walkable central areas.
