Pisa is a Tuscan city of around 90,000 people, set on the Arno River close to the Ligurian Sea. Its origins go back to antiquity, and in the Middle Ages it became one of Italy’s powerful maritime republics, leaving a rich legacy of churches, palaces and university culture. The city is best known for the UNESCO-listed Piazza del Duomo, where the Leaning Tower stands beside Pisa Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Camposanto. Beyond the tower, the compact centre has elegant riverside streets, student bars, museums and quieter medieval squares that are easy to explore on foot. Pisa is also a practical travel hub, with Pisa International Airport close to the centre and Pisa Centrale station linking Florence, Lucca, Livorno and the Tuscan coast.
