Radar is a live music venue at Godsbanen in Aarhus, Denmark. The venue has a capacity of 300 standing spectators and presents alternative, experimental and emerging music across a wide range of genres.
The programme covers rock, punk, metal, jazz, electronic music, hip-hop, experimental music and other styles outside the mainstream. Radar works especially with new artists, niche scenes and projects that cross between music, performance, visual art and digital practices.
Radar developed from Musikcaféen, which opened at Mejlgade 53 in 1978. The venue began largely as a stage for amateur musicians, but grew into a professional live music space during the 1980s and became an important part of Aarhus’ music life.
The final concert at Musikcaféen in Mejlgade took place in December 2011. The organisation then moved to Godsbanen, the cultural complex built around Aarhus’ former freight railway station, and reopened under the name Radar in 2012. The move gave the venue purpose-built concert and production facilities and increased the capacity from around 200 to 300.
The concert room is compact, but flexible. Radar has worked with different stage configurations, including performances in the round and other alternative formats. During the finale of Aarhus’ year as European Capital of Culture in 2017, Oathbreaker, Bersærk and MØL performed on a 360-degree stage surrounded by the audience.
Since 2025, Radar has operated as a network and genre venue supported by the Danish Arts Foundation, after more than two decades as one of Denmark’s regional music venues. This role reflects the venue’s focus on development, residencies, workshops and experimental projects as well as ordinary concerts.
Heavier music is a regular part of Radar’s programme. Metal, hardcore and punk concerts have included Ulcerate, Fange, HateSphere, Galge, Sunken, Oathbreaker, SUMAC, MØL and Bersærk, with both local Aarhus bands and international touring acts appearing at the venue. Radar’s place within Godsbanen also matters. The surrounding area includes studios, workshops, rehearsal rooms, theatre, art spaces and other cultural activity, placing the venue inside one of Aarhus’ main creative districts.
