Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina, USA, with about 480,000 people in the city and more than 1.5 million in the wider metro area. Founded in 1792 as a planned state capital, it is known as the “City of Oaks” and forms one corner of the Research Triangle with Durham and Chapel Hill. The city mixes government, universities and tech, with North Carolina State University and Research Triangle Park helping shape its modern identity. Key sights include the North Carolina State Capitol, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, the North Carolina Museum of Art, Pullen Park, Dorothea Dix Park and the bars, venues and restaurants of downtown districts such as Glenwood South and the Warehouse District. Getting in and around is straightforward via Raleigh-Durham International Airport, Amtrak, GoRaleigh buses and road links across the Triangle.
