Richmond is the capital of Virginia, USA, with about 230,000 people in the city and more than 1.3 million in the wider metropolitan area. Founded in 1737 on the James River and incorporated as a city in 1782, it grew as a major river port, state capital and later industrial centre, with a complicated history that includes its role as the capital of the Confederacy during the American Civil War. Today Richmond is known for its historic districts, murals, breweries, museums and strong underground music culture, with key sights including the Virginia State Capitol, the American Civil War Museum, Hollywood Cemetery, the James River parks, the Canal Walk and the arts-and-food districts around Carytown, Jackson Ward and Scott’s Addition. Getting in and around is straightforward via Richmond International Airport, Amtrak, GRTC buses and road links on I-95 and I-64.
