ROCK BAR MIDIAN

Midian is a small heavy metal bar in Osaka, Japan, with a dark interior decorated with pentagrams, skulls and other metal imagery. Like many of Osaka’s specialist rock bars, the room is compact, although it offers slightly more space than some of the city’s smallest venues such as Cherry Bomb. The atmosphere is informal and friendly, with the bar functioning as much as a meeting place for metal fans as somewhere to simply have a drink.

The musical selection is broad and ranges across different corners of heavy metal. During our visit, a surprising amount of Norwegian music appeared on both the playlist and the screens, including Trollfest, 1349, WigWam and Ihsahn. Whether this was influenced by the Norwegian visitors in the room or simply part of the regular rotation was difficult to tell, but it demonstrated how varied the music at Midian can be.

Despite the dark decoration, Midian has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, with staff and customers readily striking up conversations. Smoking is permitted inside, which may be worth noting for visitors who prefer smoke-free bars.
