Saint Vitus Bar is a metal bar and live music venue in Brooklyn, New York. Originally opened in Greenpoint in 2011, it became one of the most important small venues in the United States for metal, punk, hardcore, goth, post-punk, industrial and other forms of underground music.
The original Saint Vitus was founded by George Souleidis and Arty Shepherd, with David Castillo later becoming closely associated with the venue’s booking. The bar was built as a dark, intimate space for New York’s underground music scene, with live shows in the back room and a front bar that quickly became a meeting place for musicians, fans, DJs and artists.
Saint Vitus hosted a wide range of bands during its Greenpoint years. Artists who played the venue include Nirvana, Descendents, Neurosis, Megadeth, Anthrax, Carcass, Killing Joke, Refused, Babes in Toyland, Sick of It All, Deafheaven, Pallbearer, Mutoid Man, Negative Plane, Chelsea Wolfe, Sannhet and Krallice. The venue became known for putting major names into a small room, while also giving space to new and underground bands.
The programme was broader than live metal shows alone. Saint Vitus also hosted art exhibitions, late-night synth parties, film screenings, comedy, heavy metal yoga, DJ nights and video projects, making it a wider cultural space for New York’s heavy and dark alternative scenes.
The Greenpoint location was shut down by New York City authorities in February 2024, and the venue later confirmed that the Manhattan Avenue address would not reopen. Shows continued under the Saint Vitus Presents banner at other venues while the team worked on a new chapter.
In 2026, Saint Vitus announced its return in Bushwick, taking over the former Brooklyn Made space on Troutman Street. The new location gives Saint Vitus a larger room than the original Greenpoint bar, while keeping the name connected to Brooklyn’s metal and underground music scene.
The reopening programme includes a strong run of metal and heavy music shows, with Anthrax announced for the grand reopening. The new Saint Vitus continues the venue’s role as a home for metal, punk, hardcore, goth, industrial and underground music in New York.
