New York City is the largest city in the United States, with about 8.48 million people in the city itself and more than 19 million in the wider metropolitan area. Founded by Dutch settlers as New Amsterdam in the early 17th century and renamed New York in 1664, it grew into one of the world’s major centres for finance, immigration, media, art and music. The city is made up of five boroughs — Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island — each with its own character, from Manhattan’s skyscrapers and museums to Brooklyn’s bars and venues, Queens’ food cultures and the Bronx’s hip-hop history. Key sights include Times Square, Central Park, the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, and the old immigrant gateway at Ellis Island. New York also has one of the world’s deepest live-music scenes, with rock, punk, hardcore and metal history spread through clubs, record shops and neighbourhoods from the East Village to Brooklyn. Getting in and around is straightforward via JFK, Newark and LaGuardia airports, Penn Station, Grand Central Terminal, the subway, buses and commuter rail networks.
