Stockholm is the capital and largest city of Sweden, as well as the largest urban area in Scandinavia. Approximately 980,000 people live in the municipality, with 1.6 million in the urban area and 2.4 million in the greater metropolitan area. The city spans fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren flows into the Baltic Sea. Just outside the city to the east, along the coast, lies the island chain of the Stockholm Archipelago.
The area has been inhabited since the Stone Age, dating back to the 6th millennium BC, and was officially founded as a city in 1252 by the Swedish statesman Birger Jarl. It also serves as the county seat of Stockholm County.
Stockholm is renowned for its legendary raw death metal sound, particularly the iconic “buzzsaw” guitar tone. The city’s bands Morbid and Nihilist were among the earliest Swedish death metal acts, both beginning to record at the now-famous Sunlight Studio around 1987–1988.
