Studenterhuset Aalborg is a student-run cultural centre and live music venue at Gammeltorv 10 in central Aalborg, Denmark. Opened in September 1996, it combines a café and meeting place with two performance spaces. The main concert hall has a standing capacity of 460 people, while the smaller upstairs room, Stargate, holds 75. Although primarily established for the city’s student population, Studenterhuset is open to the general public and hosts around 80–100 concert days each year across a broad range of genres.

Studenterhuset was established on the initiative of local students and moved into a former bank building on Gammeltorv, with traces of the building’s earlier use still visible in the basement. Live music was central to the venue from the beginning. In 1999, the organisation applied to become one of Denmark’s Regional Venues and was granted the status the following year, providing public support for a programme combining established performers, emerging artists and local music development. Studenterhuset celebrated its 30th anniversary in September 2026.

The organisation relies heavily on volunteers, many of them students from Aalborg University and University College of Northern Denmark. The café and bars contribute to the running of the venue and its concert programme, alongside support from AAU, UCN, Aalborg Municipality and the Danish Arts Foundation. Studenterhuset has also organised festivals and music development projects including Way Up North and Northern Winter Beat.

Metal has had a particularly strong presence at Studenterhuset through its long association with Aalborg Metal Festival. The first edition was held there on 2 November 2002 with The Haunted, Mercenary, Raunchy, Barcode, Koldborn and Stomped. The following year featured Napalm Death, Destruction, Evergrey, Invocator, HateSphere and Mnemic. The festival went on to become one of Denmark’s longest-running dedicated metal festivals, with Studenterhuset serving as its main home for most of its history. The 2026 edition is scheduled to return to the venue on 6 and 7 November.

Heavy music at Studenterhuset is not limited to the annual festival. The venue also collaborates with Aalborg Rock & Metal on individual concerts, with recent bookings including Konkhra, Vansind and Theigns & Thralls. Together with more than two decades of Aalborg Metal Festival, this has made Studenterhuset an important part of Aalborg’s metal scene while retaining its wider role as a student and cultural centre.
