Switzerland’s contribution to heavy metal may be small in scale compared to larger countries, but its impact is undeniable. The country’s scene began to take shape in the early 1980s, with bands like Krokus achieving international fame through a mix of hard rock and heavy metal.
In the underground, Switzerland made history with Hellhammer, a short-lived but hugely influential extreme metal act. Although active for only a brief period (1982–1984), Hellhammer’s raw, primitive sound laid the groundwork for Celtic Frost, formed by Tom G. Warrior and Martin Eric Ain.
The 1990s saw Switzerland produce other notable acts such as Coroner, a progressive thrash metal band known for their technical musicianship and jazz-infused compositions, and Samael, who evolved from black metal origins into an industrial and symphonic style. These bands helped broaden the stylistic range of Swiss metal.
Today, Switzerland’s metal scene thrives through both veteran acts and newer bands, supported by festivals such as Greenfield Festival and Meh Suff! Metal-Festival, as well as numerous smaller underground events.
