The Coffin, also known as The Coffin Club, is a goth nightclub, bar and live music venue in Portland, Oregon. Located on SE Grand Avenue, it occupies the former Lovecraft venue and continues Portland’s tradition of horror-themed and alternative nightlife.
The club is built around goth, darkwave, industrial, post-punk, synth-pop and other dark alternative music. It has two dance floors, bars on both levels and a basement area known as The Crypt, giving the venue a multi-room layout suited to both DJ nights and live performances.
The interior mixes gothic nightclub décor with horror imagery and theatrical details. Skeletons, chandeliers, dark wall art and portraits of Alice Cooper are part of the setting, while the club also has an Ouija board dance floor, a photo booth and a real coffin used as part of the décor.
The Coffin hosts a regular programme of goth dance nights, live bands, fetish nights, burlesque, drag shows and other alternative events. Artists connected to the venue’s live programme include Light Asylum, Patriarchy, Vision Video, Night Club and Urban Heat.
The venue also has a patio and a vegan food cart, adding to its role as more than just a dance club. With its goth soundtrack, horror décor, live events and multi-level layout, The Coffin is one of Portland’s main nightlife spaces for goth and dark alternative culture.
