Portland is the largest city in Oregon, USA, with about 650,000 people in the city and around 2.5 million in the wider metro area. Founded in 1845 and incorporated in 1851, it grew as a Willamette River port near the Columbia River and is now best known for its independent culture, bridges, food carts, craft beer, bookstores and easy access to forests, mountains and the Pacific Northwest coast. Key sights include Powell’s City of Books, the International Rose Test Garden, Washington Park, the Portland Japanese Garden, the riverside Tom McCall Waterfront Park and the old-town/warehouse areas around downtown and the Pearl District. Portland also has a strong music and alternative culture, with venues, record shops and bars spread through neighbourhoods such as Downtown, Southeast Portland and Mississippi/Alberta. Getting in and around is straightforward via Portland International Airport, Portland Union Station, the MAX light rail, buses and streetcars, with day trips to the Columbia River Gorge, Mount Hood and the Oregon coast within reach.
