THE OTHER PLACE

The Other Place is a long-running rock and biker bar at Davidstraße 13 in the St. Pauli district of Hamburg, Germany, only a short distance from the Reeperbahn. The bar has been established at the address since at least the mid-2000s and is firmly rooted in hard rock, rock ’n’ roll and biker culture.

The exterior immediately establishes the character of the place. Part of the façade is painted with Jack Daniel’s-inspired decoration, while the lower section carries the words “Rock Bar” flanked by skulls. Above the entrance, a sign declares “Home of Rock ’n’ Roll”. The biker theme continues inside, where another slogan, “In Bikes We Trust”, appears on the drinks menu.

The interior is compact, rough-edged and filled with details accumulated around the rock and motorcycle theme. Illuminated letters spelling “DIRTY” hang above the bar, while an actual motorcycle engine is mounted on the bar counter itself. The toilets continue the same irreverent style, decorated with biker imagery and labelled “Bitches” on the women’s toilet and “Pimps” on the men’s.

Music comes largely from the jukebox and stays firmly within rock and hard rock. Motörhead, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and Rainbow are typical of the selection, alongside heavier material. Darts and occasional live performances add to the traditional St. Pauli bar atmosphere, while The Other Place also sells its own shirts, hoodies and other merchandise.

The bar has connections with the touring metal scene as well. In 2007, The Other Place hosted the official after-party following a Nightwish concert in Hamburg. Members of Turisas and Norther joined the party after the show, with Turisas later mentioning the night in their tour diary.
