The Salisbury Ale House is a traditional rock pub at 2 Wakefield Street in central Manchester, England, tucked away below Oxford Road close to Manchester Oxford Road railway station. The pub combines a classic English drinking-house interior with a strong rock and metal identity. A customer-operated jukebox provides much of the soundtrack, with rock, hard rock and heavy metal well represented.
There has been a pub on the site since at least 1849, when maps show the premises as the Tulloghgorum Tavern. At the time, the surrounding streets formed part of Little Ireland, a densely built working-class district close to the River Medlock. The pub later became known as The Salisbury and survived while much of the surrounding neighbourhood was transformed by railway construction and later redevelopment. Historic photographs show it already well established as a traditional corner pub during the mid-20th century, and it has been associated with bikers, rockers and rock music for many decades.
The interior retains the character of an old Manchester pub, with dark wood, tiled walls, booths and several small seating areas. Rock-related pictures and decoration have been added over the years without completely replacing the traditional pub surroundings. A beer garden is located at the rear, reached past the jukebox.
Beer remains an important part of The Salisbury, with several real ales normally available alongside lagers, cider and spirits. Iron Maiden’s Trooper is also available on tap. Pizza forms the main food offering and is available throughout much of the afternoon and evening. The pub’s proximity to Oxford Road’s concert venues also makes it a common stop before and after gigs, with discounts sometimes offered to customers carrying concert tickets.
