Manchester is a major city in Greater Manchester, England, with about 552,000 people in the city proper and nearly 3 million in the wider metropolitan area. Its roots go back to the Roman fort of Mamucium, founded around AD 79, but the city is best known for its explosive growth during the Industrial Revolution, when it became the world’s first great industrial city and a centre of cotton, canals, railways and radical politics. Today Manchester is known for music, football, nightlife, universities and red-brick industrial heritage, with key sights including Manchester Cathedral, John Rylands Library, the Science and Industry Museum, the Northern Quarter, Castlefield and the canals, and Old Trafford and the Etihad Stadium for football culture. Getting in and around is straightforward via Manchester Airport, Manchester Piccadilly station, the Metrolink tram network and frequent rail links across northern England.
