Umeå is the largest city in northern Sweden, with about 135,000 people in the municipality, set on the Ume River near the Gulf of Bothnia. Founded in 1622, it grew from a northern trading town into a major university, culture and research city, especially after Umeå University opened in 1965. Today it is known for its young population, creative scene, strong student life and role as European Capital of Culture in 2014. Key sights include the riverside centre, Bildmuseet, Västerbottens Museum, Umedalen Sculpture Park, Norrlandsoperan and the cafés, bars and venues around the city core. Umeå also works as a gateway to Västerbotten’s forests, coast and northern Sweden in general. Getting in and around is straightforward via Umeå Airport, Umeå Central Station, buses and bike-friendly streets, with ferries to Vaasa in Finland from nearby Holmsund.
