UPPSALA

Uppsala is Sweden’s fourth-largest city, a university hub of about 180,000 people, founded as a medieval church centre and known today for Scandinavia’s oldest university (Uppsala University, founded 1477). Its compact core is dominated by Uppsala Cathedral—Sweden’s largest—alongside the Gustavianum museum and Uppsala Castle on the ridge above town, while the Fyris River runs through café streets and parks. Just north, Gamla Uppsala adds Iron Age royal mounds and a key archaeological site tied to early Swedish history. The city is also closely linked to Carl Linnaeus, with his garden and museum sites in and around the centre. Getting in is straightforward by frequent trains from Stockholm (around 40 minutes) and a quick ride from Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
