Vienna Metal Meeting is a one-day metal festival held at Arena Wien in Vienna, Austria. The festival was first staged on 8 April 2017 and was created as a compact extreme metal festival for the Austrian capital.

The first edition used two stages and presented 15 bands in one day, with a focus on thrash metal, black metal and death metal. The lineup included Mayhem, Sodom, Asphyx, Flotsam and Jetsam, Batushka, Dew-Scented, Malignant Tumour, The Ruins of Beverast, Harakiri for the Sky and Dragged Into Sunlight.

Vienna Metal Meeting has remained centred on heavy and underground metal, while also bringing in traditional heavy metal, doom, atmospheric black metal and related styles. The festival combines established international acts with Austrian and European underground bands, giving the event a more focused character than a general rock festival.

Arena Wien is an important part of the festival’s identity. The venue complex allows Vienna Metal Meeting to use indoor stages, and some editions have also included an open-air stage. This gives the festival a compact multi-stage format while keeping the whole event within the same Arena Wien site.

Bands that have played or been booked for Vienna Metal Meeting include Opeth, Sólstafir, Unleashed, Rotting Christ, Necrophobic, Urfaust, Benighted, Cannibal Corpse, Municipal Waste, Darkspace, Immolation, 1349, Kampfar, Ellende, Sinister, Afsky, Groza, Anaal Nathrakh, Hypocrisy, W.A.S.P. and Thyrfing.

The 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the festival later returned to Arena Wien. With its one-day format, strong extreme metal focus and use of Arena Wien’s indoor and outdoor spaces, Vienna Metal Meeting has become one of Vienna’s main recurring metal festivals.
