Viper Room Vienna is a live music club at Landstraßer Hauptstraße 38 in Vienna, Austria. Opened on 4 May 2007 by Martin Borovnik, the venue takes its name from the famous Viper Room in Los Angeles, chosen partly because Borovnik and his friends were fans of Johnny Depp. From the beginning, the club developed a strong alternative profile, combining live concerts with metal, rock, goth and other club nights. By its fifth anniversary in 2012, more than 1,100 bands had already performed there.
The main concert room is located in the basement and has a capacity of around 300 people, creating an intimate club setting with the audience close to the stage. A smaller bar on the upper level holds around 40 people. The venue is also set up to accommodate touring bands, with its own backstage area, showers and parking facilities for nightliners.
Metal has been central to Viper Room’s programme throughout its history. International bands appearing there have included Suffocation, Crowbar, Municipal Waste, Marduk, Moonsorrow, Cryptopsy, Corrosion of Conformity, Primordial, Swallow the Sun, Kampfar, Gorgoroth, Blaze Bayley and Massacre, alongside a large number of Austrian underground acts. The bookings cover a wide range of heavy music, from traditional heavy and doom metal to death, black, thrash, hardcore and punk.
Viper Room has also hosted Austrian rounds of Wacken Metal Battle, giving newer local bands the opportunity to perform on the same stage used by established international touring acts. Over nearly two decades, the club has built up an extensive concert history and remains one of Vienna’s regular small venues for underground rock and metal.
