Vossevangen, usually simply called Voss, is the administrative centre of Voss municipality in Vestland, Norway, with around 6,800 people in the urban settlement. The village lies between Lake Vangsvatnet and the surrounding mountains and developed around Vangskyrkja, a stone church completed in the late 13th century. For centuries Vangen was a small agricultural centre, but its importance increased dramatically when the railway from Bergen reached Voss in 1883 and later became part of the Bergen Line between Oslo and Bergen. Much of the centre was destroyed by German bombing in April 1940 and was subsequently rebuilt. Today Voss is particularly known for outdoor activities and adventure sports, including skiing, rafting, paragliding and skydiving, with Ekstremsportveko drawing participants from around the world each summer. The village also hosts Vossa Jazz, founded in 1974, and Voss Folk Museum at Mølstertunet, while the surrounding mountains, waterfalls and valleys make it a popular base for exploring western Norway.
