WARSAW

Warsaw is the capital and largest city of Poland, with about 1.9 million people in the city and over 3 million in the wider metropolitan area. Set on the Vistula River, it grew from a medieval Mazovian town into Poland’s royal capital in the late 16th century, and later became a symbol of destruction and reconstruction after much of the historic centre was devastated during World War II. Today the UNESCO-listed Old Town, rebuilt after 1945, sits alongside broad socialist-era avenues, modern high-rises and busy cultural districts. Key sights include the Royal Castle, Old Town Market Square, the Palace of Culture and Science, Łazienki Park, the Warsaw Rising Museum and the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. Warsaw also has a strong bar, club and live-music scene, with nightlife spread through the city centre, Praga, Powiśle and along the Vistula riverside. Getting in and around is straightforward via Warsaw Chopin Airport, Warszawa Centralna railway station, the Metro, trams, buses and regional trains.
