WROCŁAW

Wrocław is a major city in southwestern Poland with about 670,000 people, first recorded in the 10th century and shaped by a long, mixed Central European history under Polish, Bohemian, Habsburg and Prussian rule. Built across islands and channels of the Oder River, it’s best known for its colourful Market Square (Rynek), one of Europe’s largest, and a lively old town packed with Gothic and Baroque landmarks. Highlights include the Town Hall and surrounding burgher houses, Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski) with its twin-spired cathedral and evening gas lamps, and the UNESCO-listed Centennial Hall (Hala Stulecia) in the parkland around the Pergola and multimedia fountain. The city is also famous for its small bronze dwarf statues scattered across the centre, turning sightseeing into a built-in scavenger hunt. Getting in and around is straightforward via Wrocław Airport (WRO), a walkable central core and a dense tram network, with easy day trips into Lower Silesia’s castles and mountain foothills.
