Ye Olde Salutation Inn is a historic pub in Nottingham, England. Parts of the building date from around 1240, and it is widely counted among the oldest pubs in the city. It is a Grade II listed building and is known locally as The Sal.
The pub is built above much older caves, with rock-cut cellars beneath the site that have been dated to the Saxon period. Those caves form part of the place’s long history and are one of its most distinctive features. Over the centuries, the inn has also accumulated a strong reputation for ghost lore and is often described as one of Nottingham’s most haunted pubs.
Alongside its historic character, Ye Olde Salutation Inn has a strong place in Nottingham’s rock and metal nightlife. The pub serves Iron Maiden’s Trooper beer on tap, and its live history includes a long list of underground rock and metal concerts, including bands such as Crobot, King Kraken, Heathen Deity, Lifesick, Hecate Enthroned, Tailgunner, Witch Tripper and Raised by Owls.
The pub is also used for hard rock, heavy metal and alternative nights, including the regular Hexx event, which combines DJs and live bands in a medieval pub setting. This mix of ancient caves, haunted-pub folklore, Trooper on tap and underground metal activity makes Ye Olde Salutation Inn one of Nottingham’s more distinctive heavy music pubs.
