Zaragoza is the capital of Aragón in northeastern Spain, with around 700,000 people. The city stands on the Ebro River and has more than 2,000 years of history, beginning with the Iberian settlement of Salduie before the Romans founded Caesaraugusta around 14 BC. Its long history remains visible throughout the centre, from Roman ruins to the Moorish Aljafería Palace and the enormous Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar, one of Spain’s best-known religious landmarks. Zaragoza is also noted for its Mudéjar architecture, several examples of which form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while the narrow streets of El Tubo are particularly known for tapas bars. The city has an important place in Spanish rock history as the birthplace of Héroes del Silencio, formed in Zaragoza in 1984 with Enrique Bunbury as vocalist. The band became one of the most internationally successful Spanish rock groups, and a monument dedicated to them now stands in the city.
