Žilina

Žilina is a city in northwestern Slovakia with about 80,000 people, first mentioned in the 13th century and granted town privileges in 1312. It sits where the Váh and Kysuca rivers meet, and it’s best known as a transport and industrial hub near the Czech and Polish borders, with a lively university feel. The compact centre is built around Mariánske námestie and Andrej Hlinka Square, with arcaded houses, cafés and a walkable old-town grid, while highlights nearby include Budatín Castle on the riverbank and easy day trips into the Malá Fatra mountains. Žilina is also known for modern Slovak architecture such as the Church of the Holy Trinity at Sídlisko Vlčince, and it works as a practical base thanks to frequent rail links to Bratislava, Košice and across the region.
