MALTA

Despite its small size, Malta has maintained a surprisingly active and dedicated heavy metal scene since the 1980s. Influenced by British heavy metal and hard rock, the island developed a close-knit underground supported by local venues, independent promoters, and a loyal fanbase.

One of Malta’s best-known metal bands is Forsaken, formed in 1990, whose blend of epic doom and traditional heavy metal has earned international recognition in underground circles. Other notable acts include Nomad Son (doom/heavy metal), Beheaded, one of the country’s leading death metal bands, and Abysmal Torment, known for brutal death metal.

Malta’s compact size has helped foster a strong sense of community within the scene, with most activity centred around the towns surrounding Valletta and St. Julian’s. Over the years, the island has hosted numerous local festivals and club events, while also attracting international acts through venues and promoters dedicated to rock and metal.

Today, Malta’s metal scene remains diverse and resilient, spanning traditional heavy metal, doom, death, black, and progressive styles. Though small in scale, the island has built a reputation that punches well above its weight within the global underground metal community.
