Tick-Tack is a long-running hard rock and heavy metal bar at Maygasse 12 in Graz, Austria. The bar has roots stretching back considerably further than its present operation, with an earlier Tick-Tack located in Kernstockgasse. The current Maygasse location has been established as a metal meeting place for many years.
The interior is a mixture of heavy metal memorabilia, unusual artwork and decorations accumulated over the years. Numerous clocks are displayed around the bar, reflecting the Tick-Tack name. Iron Maiden and other metal posters cover parts of the walls, while a Motörhead clock and flags for Iceland and Finland are among the more distinctive details. Hard rock and heavy metal are played throughout the bar, ranging from Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Guns N’ Roses to Metallica, Slayer, Amon Amarth and Satyricon.
One of the inner walls is covered by a large surrealistic mural with imagery reminiscent of Salvador Dalí. Several foosball tables are also found inside, adding to the traditional pub character of the place.
Tick-Tack has a long-standing interest in Nordic drinks. Icelandic beers such as Einstök have been sold alongside Finnish specialities including Minttu and Salmiakki, and Finnish and Icelandic products have formed part of the selection for many years. The Nordic theme is also reflected in the Icelandic and Finnish flags displayed inside the bar.
Food forms a substantial part of Tick-Tack. The menu has included schnitzel, cordon bleu, burgers, chili con carne, nachos, Käsespätzle, dumplings, finger food and other substantial pub dishes, with both Austrian and international influences.
Tick-Tack temporarily closed in April 2023 after its previous operator announced that the business was no longer financially viable. The closure proved short-lived. Ernie and Lea Erntl, together with two additional partners, took over the premises and reopened Tick-Tack on 15 July 2023. Ernie already had a personal connection with the bar, having worked at the original Tick-Tack in Kernstockgasse many years earlier.
The new owners retained the established rock and metal identity, food service and much of the character of the earlier operation. This continuity, together with its unusual interior, Nordic drinks selection and long association with Graz’s metal community, makes Tick-Tack one of the city’s more distinctive surviving metal bars.
