BUDAPEST

Budapest is Hungary’s capital, a Danube-straddling city of about 1.7 million (metro ~3.3 million) created in 1873 from Buda, Pest and Óbuda. Its UNESCO-listed ensemble takes in the Buda Castle Quarter, the riverbanks and Andrássy Avenue to Heroes’ Square, while headline sights range from the Parliament and Chain Bridge to Fisherman’s Bastion. Famous thermal baths—Széchenyi and Gellért among them—anchor daily life, and the Jewish Quarter’s “ruin bars” add late-night colour. Getting around is easy via trams and the historic M1 Millennium Underground (1896), with international access through Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) and mainline trains at Keleti, Nyugati and Déli.
