Athens is Greece’s capital, a metro of around 3.1 million (about 660,000 in the City of Athens municipality), with roots stretching from the Bronze Age through the classical Golden Age and into a modern European capital. It’s best known for the Acropolis and Parthenon above a compact historic core of lanes and squares, with key stops including the Acropolis Museum, the Ancient Agora, the Roman Forum, and the Panathenaic Stadium. Neighbourhoods add distinct flavour: Plaka and Monastiraki for old streets and markets, Psyrri for bars and live nights, and Exarchia for alternative cafés and venues, while the National Garden and Lycabettus Hill provide green and viewpoints. Getting in and around is straightforward via Athens International Airport (ATH), the three-line Metro, tram links to the coast, and ferries from nearby Piraeus to the islands.
