BUCHAREST

Bucharest is the capital and largest city of Romania, with about 1.8 million people in the city and more than 2 million in the wider urban area. First documented in 1459 in a charter linked to Vlad Țepeș, it later became the capital of Romania in 1862 and grew into the country’s main political, cultural and economic centre. The city is best known for its mix of Belle Époque boulevards, Orthodox churches, communist-era monumental architecture and lively nightlife, with key sights including the Palace of the Parliament, the Old Town around Lipscani, the Romanian Athenaeum, Revolution Square, Cișmigiu Gardens and the Village Museum in Herăstrău/King Michael I Park. Bucharest also has a strong bar, club and live-music scene, with much of the nightlife concentrated around the Old Town and neighbourhoods such as Universitate and Control/Palatul Universul area. Getting in and around is straightforward via Henri Coandă International Airport, Gara de Nord railway station, the Metro, trams, buses and ride-hailing.
