FANTOFT STAVE CHURCH

The original Fantoft Stave Church was built in Fortun, Sogn, in 1170 and was moved to Fantoft in Bergen in 1883. On 6 June 1992, the church was set on fire and burned to the ground. Varg Vikernes, from the one-man band Burzum and a short-time member of Mayhem, was strongly suspected as the culprit but was not convicted. Fantoft Stave Church was the first church burned down by members of the Norwegian black metal scene. The church has now been rebuilt as it was before the fire in 1992.

A photograph of the church’s burnt shell appeared on the cover of the 1993 Burzum EP Aske (Norwegian for “ashes”).
