SHEFFIELD

Sheffield is a major city in South Yorkshire, England, with about 556,000 people in the city proper and a wider urban area of more than 700,000. Its roots go back to early medieval settlement, but Sheffield is best known for its industrial rise as one of the world’s great steel-making cities, especially famous for cutlery, stainless steel and heavy engineering. Today it mixes red-brick industrial heritage with universities, live music, pubs and one of the greenest settings of any large British city. Key sights include the Kelham Island Museum, Sheffield Cathedral, the Winter Garden, Millennium Gallery and the former industrial quarter around Kelham Island, while the Peak District National Park sits directly on the city’s western edge for walking, climbing and moorland scenery. Getting in and around is straightforward via Sheffield railway station, the Supertram network and road links across Yorkshire, Derbyshire and the wider North.
