Spain, located on the Iberian Peninsula, developed its heavy metal scene later than some other European countries, but it has grown into a diverse and vibrant part of the global metal community. In the early 1980s, the La Movida Madrileña countercultural movement opened the door for rock and metal, with bands like Barón Rojo and Obús achieving national fame and even international recognition — Barón Rojo notably toured with Iron Maiden and played the Reading Festival in 1982.

During the 1990s and 2000s, Spain’s scene expanded into extreme metal, producing respected death and black metal acts such as Avulsed, Haemorrhage, and Noctem, as well as power and symphonic metal bands like Dark Moor and WarCry. The country is also home to major festivals including Resurrection Fest, Leyendas del Rock, and Rock Fest Barcelona, which attract both local and international fans.
