Karmøygeddon Metal Festival is an annual heavy metal festival held in Kopervik on the island of Karmøy, on the west coast of Norway. Established in 2004, the festival normally takes place around the end of April and beginning of May and runs from Thursday to Saturday. The programme covers a broad spectrum of metal, from traditional heavy and power metal to death, black, folk and extreme metal. Around 4,000 people attend each year, with concerts divided between a large outdoor tent stage and a smaller indoor club stage.

The festival was founded by Johnny Angelund and Harald Magne Revheim, two friends from Kopervik who wanted to bring live metal to their hometown. The first Karmøygeddon was held in 2004 as a one-day outdoor festival with around 400 visitors. The predominantly Norwegian line-up included Thunderbolt, Thundra, Mind Crime, Heat Seekers, Pagan’s Mind and Jørn Lande. The following year the festival expanded to two days and welcomed its first international booking, Danish metal band Mercenary.

Growing attendance led Karmøygeddon to move from Kopervik to the larger Byscenen venue in nearby Haugesund in 2006. The festival spent nine editions there and gradually expanded into a three-day event, building an increasingly international programme along the way. Bands appearing during its years in Haugesund included Helloween, Sabaton, Behemoth, Katatonia, Kamelot, Finntroll, Kreator, Amorphis, Moonspell, Insomnium and Destruction.

In 2015, Karmøygeddon returned to Kopervik and moved into a larger festival site that allowed the event to grow while returning it to the town where it began. The new setup combined an indoor club stage with a large covered outdoor stage, alongside bars, merchandise areas and a nearby camper-van site. The first edition back in Kopervik featured HammerFall, Kvelertak, Arch Enemy, U.D.O., Wintersun, Swallow the Sun, Einherjer and several other international and Norwegian bands.

Karmøygeddon has continued to mix established international artists with Norwegian bands and smaller emerging acts. Over the years, the festival has hosted artists including Rotting Christ, Satyricon, Hypocrisy, Borknagar, Septicflesh, Geoff Tate, Amorphis, Stratovarius, Battle Beast, Marduk and Pain. The 2026 edition continued the same broad approach with Accept, Dark Tranquillity, Abbath, Old Man’s Child, Insomnium, Septicflesh, Wolfheart, Djerv and Iotunn among the performers.

Tons of Rock is Norway’s largest rock and metal festival, held at Ekebergsletta in Oslo. The festival started at Fredriksten Fortress in Halden in 2014, where it combined heavy music with the historic fortress setting, before moving to Oslo in 2019 to allow for a larger audience and a bigger festival area. Its Oslo location makes it easier to reach than many rural European metal festivals, with public transport from the city centre and accommodation options across the capital.

The festival takes place in late June and covers a broad range of hard rock and heavy metal, including classic heavy metal, thrash, death metal, black metal, punk, hardcore, alternative rock, modern metal and mainstream rock. Since moving to Ekebergsletta, Tons of Rock has developed into one of the major heavy music festivals in Northern Europe, with several stages, international headliners, Norwegian bands, food areas, bars and a large outdoor festival site close to central Oslo.

Artists who have played Tons of Rock include Iron Maiden, Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Slayer, Alice Cooper, Accept, Saxon, Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, Mayhem, Satyricon and Black Debbath. The festival’s combination of major international names, Norwegian metal history and a large Oslo festival site has made it one of the central annual events in Norway’s heavy music calendar.
