Lisbon is Portugal’s capital and largest city, with about 545,000 people in the municipality and just over 3 million in the metropolitan area. Set on seven hills above the Tagus River, it is one of Western Europe’s oldest capitals, with roots stretching back more than 2,000 years and a cityscape shaped by Roman, Moorish, medieval and maritime history. The historic core runs from the steep lanes of Alfama and the castle hill to Baixa, rebuilt in a grand grid after the 1755 earthquake, while Belém is tied to Portugal’s Age of Discoveries through the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and riverside monuments. Lisbon is also known for trams, tiled façades, miradouros, fado houses, seafood, wine bars and a strong nightlife scene in Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré. Getting in and around is straightforward via Lisbon Airport, metro, trams, buses and suburban trains to Sintra, Cascais and the Atlantic coast.
