AMSTERDAM

Amsterdam is the Netherlands’ capital, a canal-ring city of about 934,000 people (2025 estimate) founded in the late 12th century around a dam on the Amstel and expanded into a global trading powerhouse in the 17th-century Golden Age. The UNESCO-listed Canal Ring sets the tone with gabled houses and bridges, while headline stops include the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House, plus the Jordaan’s cafés and De Pijp’s markets and bars. Beyond the centre, Amsterdam Noord adds waterside hangouts and viewpoints, and Vondelpark is the classic green escape. Getting in and around is easy by foot, bike and tram/metro, with Schiphol Airport a quick train ride away and Amsterdam Centraal linking the country and Europe.
