IRELAND

Ireland’s heavy metal scene began to take shape in the late 1970s and early 1980s, heavily influenced by the NWOBHM and hard rock movements from the UK. One of the country’s earliest and most important bands was Thin Lizzy, whose hard rock and twin-guitar harmonies inspired generations of metal musicians worldwide. While Thin Lizzy were not strictly a metal band, their influence on heavy metal is undeniable.

The 1980s saw the emergence of Irish traditional heavy metal acts such as Sweet Savage from Northern Ireland, whose speed-infused style influenced Metallica (who famously covered their song “Killing Time”). Dublin also saw a small but dedicated metal underground, though much of the early extreme metal activity came from Northern Ireland’s punk/metal crossover scene.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Ireland’s extreme metal gained momentum with bands like Primordial, blending black metal with Celtic folk influences and lyrical themes drawn from Irish history and mythology. Other notable acts include doom merchants Mourning Beloveth, death metallers Abaddon Incarnate, and folk/pagan metal bands such as Cruachan and Waylander, who brought traditional instruments and Gaelic themes into the genre.

Today, Ireland’s metal community thrives with festivals like Siege of Limerick and a vibrant underground in cities like Dublin, Belfast, and Limerick.
