Chicago is the largest city in Illinois and the third-largest city in the United States, with around 2.73 million people. Incorporated as a city in 1837 on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan, it grew rapidly as a major rail, shipping and industrial centre linking the eastern United States with the Midwest. Much of the city was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, after which Chicago became a centre for modern architecture and early skyscraper design. Major landmarks include the Willis Tower, Millennium Park, the Art Institute of Chicago, Navy Pier and the lakefront, while neighbourhoods such as Wicker Park, Logan Square and Avondale are known for bars, clubs and live music. Chicago also has an important place in heavy music history. Doom metal pioneers Trouble formed here in the late 1970s, while Ministry emerged from Chicago in 1981 and later became one of the defining bands of industrial metal.
