Gdańsk is a Baltic port city of roughly 490,000 people on Poland’s northern coast, first mentioned in 997 and long shaped by its role as a Hanseatic trading centre and Poland’s historic seaport. The heart of the city is the restored Main Town, built around the Long Market (Długi Targ) with landmarks such as Neptune’s Fountain, Artus Court and the Town Hall, plus St Mary’s Basilica—one of the world’s largest brick churches. Gdańsk is also closely tied to 20th-century history through Westerplatte, where fighting began in 1939, and the shipyard area and European Solidarity Centre linked to the Solidarity movement. The city sits right on the Gulf of Gdańsk, so beach time and seafront walks are easy, and the wider Tricity area (Gdańsk–Sopot–Gdynia) adds extra neighbourhoods and nightlife within short local hops. International access is via Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN), about 17 km from the Main Town.
