Galleri Fjalar

Galleri Fjalar is the gallery run by Kristian Eivind Espedal, better known as Gaahl (ex-Gorgoroth, Gaahls Wyrd, Trelldom). The exhibitions change throughout the year, showcasing various artists — mostly paintings in different styles.

You might be able to meet Gaahl there, but be sure to check the tour schedules of his current bands in advance. Most importantly, visit the gallery for the art itself — not just because he was the frontman of Gorgoroth or due to his black metal legacy. Gaahl doesn’t dwell in the past and is actively involved in current projects, which you can learn about — maybe even discuss with him if the opportunity arises.

Appreciate the artwork on display. Don’t just take a photo with him and leave — support the gallery by buying something if you find a piece you genuinely like.

HOLMENKOLLEN CHAPEL

Holmenkollen Chapel, built in 1903, was destroyed by fire on August 23, 1992. This incident was one of many church burnings that occurred in Norway during the uprising of the black metal scene at the time. The new chapel was completed in 1996. The exact events surrounding the burning of the chapel are disputed. According to legend, Varg “Count Grishnackh” Vikernes (of Burzum and Mayhem), Bård “Faust” Eithun (of Emperor), and Øystein “Euronymous” Aarseth (of Mayhem) went to the chapel to bomb it. When the homemade bomb they placed on the altar failed to detonate, they doused hymnals and Bibles in gasoline and set them on fire on the altar, resulting in the church burning to the ground. Vikernes and Eithun were convicted of burning down the church, but Aarseth was killed by Vikernes before the trial. Vikernes, who was convicted of burning down four churches, has later claimed that all the churches except the one in Stavanger were set on fire by another individual.

THE MAYHEM BRIDGE

The Mayhem Bridge at Bøleråsen in Langhus is a small bridge for walking. Under the bridge is the famous Mayhem logo graffiti. It has been painted over many times, but it is still coming back. Again and again.
