TALLINN

Tallinn is the capital and largest city of Estonia, with about 460,000 people, set on the Gulf of Finland across the water from Helsinki. First recorded in 1219 and shaped by Danish, German, Swedish, Russian and Estonian rule, it is best known for its UNESCO-listed Old Town, one of the best-preserved medieval city centres in Northern Europe. Key sights include Town Hall Square, Toompea Castle, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, St Olaf’s Church, the old city walls and towers, and the harbour-side Kalamaja district with Telliskivi Creative City nearby. Tallinn also has a strong mix of medieval atmosphere and modern tech culture, with cafés, bars, venues and museums spread between the Old Town, Rotermann Quarter and former industrial areas. Getting in and around is straightforward via Tallinn Airport, the ferry port, Balti jaam railway station, trams, buses and trolleybuses, with Helsinki only a short ferry ride away.
