DENMARK

Denmark’s contribution to heavy metal is significant, despite its relatively small size. The country’s first wave of heavy metal emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s, heavily influenced by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. The most iconic act to come from this period is Mercyful Fate, fronted by the distinctive falsetto and occult imagery of King Diamond.

King Diamond’s solo career, launched in 1985, further cemented Denmark’s place on the metal map, blending theatrical horror themes with technical musicianship.

Denmark’s scene has also produced strong thrash and death metal acts, including Artillery, who became one of Europe’s most respected thrash bands, and Invocator, known for their technical death/thrash style in the early 1990s.

In the 2000s and 2010s, bands like Volbeat gained international success by blending heavy metal with rockabilly, hard rock, and melodic elements, appealing to both mainstream and metal audiences.

Denmark hosts several metal festivals, with Copenhell in Copenhagen being the largest and most internationally recognized. The country’s metal community is known for its dedication, and Copenhagen in particular remains a hub for live shows across all subgenres.
