ITALY

Italy’s heavy metal scene began to develop in the late 1970s and early 1980s, influenced by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and the European hard rock movement. Early pioneers such as Vanadium and Strana Officina helped establish a foundation for traditional heavy metal in the country, while the 1980s also saw the emergence of bands like Bulldozer, who blended speed and thrash metal with a raw, underground edge.

In the 1990s, Italy became internationally known for its symphonic and power metal scene, led by bands like Labÿrinth, Domine, and especially Rhapsody (later Rhapsody of Fire), who combined fast, melodic metal with orchestral arrangements and fantasy themes. The country also developed a strong progressive metal presence, with acts like Eldritch and DGM.

Italy has also contributed to the extreme metal spectrum, producing notable black metal and death metal bands such as Necrodeath, Stormlord, and Fleshgod Apocalypse, the latter blending technical death metal with symphonic elements.

Today, Italy’s metal scene is supported by festivals like Metalitalia Festival and Agglutination Metal Festival, alongside a vibrant underground circuit that keeps both traditional and modern styles alive.
