Paris is the capital and largest city of France, with around 2.1 million people within the city proper and more than seven million in the wider Grand Paris area. Its history stretches back more than 2,000 years to the ancient settlement of Lutetia, which developed under Roman rule along the Seine. Paris later became the political and cultural centre of France and today is known for landmarks including the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, the Arc de Triomphe and the hilltop district of Montmartre. The city is divided into 20 arrondissements and has one of Europe’s most extensive public transport systems, making its many distinct neighbourhoods relatively easy to explore. Paris has also played an important role in French hard rock and heavy metal, particularly from the late 1970s onward. Trust, one of the country’s pioneering hard rock and metal bands, emerged from the Paris region in 1977, while generations of French and international metal bands have played the city’s clubs, theatres and arenas.
