Poland’s heavy metal scene began to take shape in the early 1980s, during a time of political unrest and heavy censorship under communist rule. Despite restrictions, underground bands emerged, influenced by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and early thrash. One of the first and most important names was Turbo, whose 1985 album Kawaleria Szatana became a classic of Polish heavy metal.
The late 1980s and early 1990s saw Poland become a breeding ground for extreme metal, particularly death and black metal. Vader rose to prominence as one of Eastern Europe’s first internationally recognized death metal bands, gaining a global following in the 1990s. Around the same time, Behemoth emerged from the black metal underground, later evolving into a dominant force in extreme metal worldwide.
Poland’s scene is also known for its diversity, with folk metal acts like Percival Schuttenbach and pagan/black metal bands such as Arkona (not to be confused with the Russian band). Thrash metal has remained strong as well, represented by bands like KAT and Acid Drinkers.
The country hosts major metal festivals, most notably Mystic Festival in Gdańsk and Pol’and’Rock Festival (formerly Woodstock Festival Poland), which often features heavy metal acts alongside other genres. Today, Poland’s metal scene is considered one of the most intense and dedicated in Europe, especially within the extreme metal spectrum.
