London is the capital and largest city of England and the United Kingdom, with a population of just under nine million. It’s is a sprawling, layered city that rewards mixing big-ticket sights with neighbourhood wandering. The historic core stretches from Westminster and the South Bank to the City, where icons like the Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge and St Paul’s sit beside glassy towers and riverside paths. North and east you’ll find characterful districts—Camden’s markets and venues, Soho’s late-night streets, Shoreditch and Hackney for bars, galleries and street art—while south of the river runs from Borough Market to Peckham rooftops and Deptford’s creative pockets. Getting around is easiest by Oyster/contactless on the Tube and Overground, with buses filling the gaps; walking between clusters is often quicker than you think. London is also famous for being the birthplace of many British bands in the early 1980s and for the rise of the movement known as NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal).
